Indian-origin woman among Britain's top 10 powerful lawyers

Indian-origin lawyer and Britain's foremost human rights advocate Shami Chakrabarti figures among the top 10 most powerful lawyers in The Times' annual list of the Top 100 club.

This is another feather in the cap for Chakrabarti, who is already considered among the top 50 most powerful people in Britain. Knighted by the Queen for her contribution to law and human rights in 2007, she beat Tony Blair and David Cameron in a 2006 vote for Britain's most inspiring figure.

In 2005, she was on the BBC's shortlist of the 10 people who may run Britain.

A law graduate from the London School of Economics, she currently heads one of the world's best known human rights organisations, Liberty. She has recently been appointed as chancellor of Oxford Brookes University.

According to the list, Britain's topmost lawyer is senior law lord, Lord Bingham of Cornhill, and Justice secretary and Lord Chancellor Jack Straw comes second. The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Philips of Worth Matravers, is third. Shami Chakrabarti is ninth on the list.

HIGH COURT OF KARNATAKA Notification about the Circuit Bench cases

The Full Court of the High Court of Karnataka, vide Resolution dated 03.06.2008, has resolved to commence sitting of Judges and Division Courts at the Circuit Benches at Dharwad and Gulbarga on 07.07.2008. The Full Court has also resolved that cases arising from the Districts of Bagalkot, Bellary, Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada - Karwar and Koppal will be heard and decided at the Circuit Bench at Dharwad and cases arising from the Districts of Bidar, Bijapur, Gulbarga and Raichur will be heard and decided at the Circuit Bench at Gulbarga. It has been further resolved that pending cases from the above mentioned districts will be transferred to the respective Circuit Bench before 07.07.2008 and that filing of new cases at the Circuit Benches will be permitted from 07.07.2008.

Demand for additional sessions court at Yellapur

Presently the session's court is situated at Karwar, the district headquarters. The people of upgaht taluks of Yellapur, Sirsi, Siddapur, Mundgod and Haliyal complain that Karwar is too far a place for them. They have to travel 100 to 200 km to reach Karwar for court work. This would be a waste of time and money. The people of Yellapur point out that there were instances of shifting the session's court from Karwar to Yellapur temporarily during May and June. They said that Yellapur is 50-70 km away from the headquarters of each upgaht taluk. As such, it serves as a central place for all these taluks. Already there are JMFC and Civil Courts (Junior and Senior) at Yellapur. Hence, it had all the facilities to have an additional session's court.

HC notice to Karwar DC

The High Court on Monday allowed the writ petition filed by Harikantra Karvi Fisheries Cooperative Society (HKFCS) opposing the tender notification issued by the Director Of Ports and Inland Water Transport on August 20, 2007, to construct a deep sea port at Karwar and issued notices to the DC Karwar, Department of Ports and Inland Water Transport, Department of Forest and Environment and Union Ministry of Forest and Environment.

The iron ore exporters from the State have constructed some permanent structures near the port after having obtained permission from the port authorities to store iron ore.

They have stored thousands of lorries of iron ore causing various health hazards to the residents. A deep sea port is required to transport the large quantities of iron ore that has been stored.

Director of Ports and Inland Water Transport on August 20, 2007 issued a tender notification to construct a deep sea port on build, own, operate, and transfer basis. There is a fisheries port in Karwar. Navy activities also go on in the existing port. If a modern deep sea port is constructed, fishing activities would be affected. HKFCS filed a writ petition in this regard.

The HC division bench consisting of Justice Cyriac Joseph and A N Venupal Gowda allowed the petition and issued notices to the authorities concerned.

Advocates heading for new 'benches'

The two High Court circuit benches set to start functioning from July 7, have brought smiles on the faces of several advocates, who are practising in Bangalore as they are more happy to return to their backyards in North Karnataka.

Many advocates are busy searching for suitable places to establish their offices at Dharwad and Gulbarga. Some of them have already started packing-up.

Even those North Karnataka advocates, who have a thriving practice in Bangalore since 1980 are ready to move their office to Dharwad, because they have been receiving more than 80 per cent of the cases from that region.

Over 40,000 case files of northern region pending before the High Court have already been transferred appropriately to these two benches by the Court registry.

They are all set to start their practice at Dharwad and Gulbarga by next week.

The Circuit Bench will have jurisdiction over the districts of Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bellary, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal and Uttar Kannada. Apart from Justice S.R. Bannurmath, Justice A.N. Venugopalgouda, Justice S. Abdul Nazir, Justice Ashok Inchageri and Justice A.S. Pachchapur will be officiating judges.

Dharwad gets the High Court Bench...

The nearly nine decades old aspiration of the people of North Karnataka became a reality at 3:51 pm on Friday the 4th July 2008 with the inauguration of the Karnataka High Court Circuit Bench here by Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan.

Speaking after inaugurating the Circuit Bench, Justice Balakrishnan said that many a time the demand for high court benches or circuit benches were unreasonable and not in the interests of litigants or the public. “But I feel the demand for Dharwad bench was genuine,” he added. However, he asked the legal fraternity to ensure that the Circuit Bench renders utmost service to the people.

During the inaugural function, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa put forth a proposal for setting up a Supreme Court bench in Bangalore and sought a full-fledged High Court bench in Dharwad.
